Teach English Online & Travel the World

Teaching English online is a great way to gain location independence and travel the world or supplement your income. You can work from home and all you need is a computer, phone or tablet. Some companies require a laptop and others allow you to teach from a tablet or phone. As with any job, there are pros and cons and I’ll cover both in this post.

When I first heard about teaching English online I had a few reservations. 🤔

  • How can I teach English to Chinese students if I don’t speak Chinese?

The good news is, you don’t need to speak another language in order to teach English online.

  • Do I have to sign up for a $1,500 TESOL certification?

While there are classes that are $1,500 you can also get one for less than $25.00 USD that’s fully accredited, internationally recognized, and will give you the tools you need to be successful as a teacher of English as a Second Language!

You can sign up for your TESOL for less than $27 USD here.

    Pros of teaching English online

  • The positions are 100% remote so you can work from anywhere as long as there is a strong reliable internet connection.

  • You are paid in US dollars ( $10 - $26 / hr)

  • You can make your own schedule ( Please note that most companies require you to work during peak hours but you can pick when you work within those hours. )

  • You are an independent contractor.

  • You don’t have to wear pants.

  • Flexible schedules

    Cons of Teaching English Online

  • No health benefits

  • No paid time off

  • No paid vacations

  • Some companies will hire you but not book you right away or sometimes at all.

  • Schedules aren’t set so you may be very busy one month and slow the next.

  • Some require a quiet setting so you might have to work from a home office or quiet hotel room Taher than the beach.

    Requirements

  • Most companies require a bachelor’s degree.

  • Reliable internet connection

  • Quiet working space with adequate lighting

  • Webcam

    FAQs

Do I need a bachelor’s degree to teach online?

Some companies require a degree and some do not.

Can I sustain myself with teaching alone?

This depends on many factors mostly your lifestyle. There are people who support themselves 100% with teaching alone but everyone has different lifestyles, hustles and experience. I made over 5.5k my first month and my worst month was $800. Some people have only made $300 a month or less.

Teaching online is not a guaranteed way to make money, there are many determining factors that will affect how much money you make such as

  • Experience

  • Level of education

  • Location

  • Company

  • Booking rates

  • Hustle ( how much you work, how many companies you work for etc.)

Please note that more than ever people want the luxury of working from home and teaching online with no pants on, with that being said there is an influx of people applying for these gigs. You may have to apply to multiple companies before getting hired. You may not be hired at all especially without having the tools needed to successfully pass your interview. People tend to think that getting online jobs are much easier to secure than in-person jobs, that is not always the case so don’t get discouraged. If you would like assistance in getting hired as an online ESL teacher consider booking a coaching session with me.
