Passport out of Pages? How to Apply for a New Passport Abroad

If you run out of pages in your passport while living abroad don't fret! It's often much faster to get your passport renewed abroad. This may not be the case in every city abroad but it's definitely the case for Thailand, Vietnam and other countries around the world.

Here's what I'll cover in this post.

Important things to know

  • Adding pages to your old passport is no longer an option.

  • Some countries require that you have at least two blank pages in your passport when arriving.

  • Many countries require you to also have 6 months of validly left before your passport expires.

  • You do not have to return to your home country to apply for a new passport.

  • It's usually much faster when you apply abroad.

  • You will automatically get the frequent traveler passport with 48 pages instead of 24

Here's the steps needed to renew your passport abroad.

  1. Go to the Embassy website for the country you'll be applying for. Here is the website to book your appointment in Vietnam.

  2. Book an appointment.

  3. Fill out the form online and print it. Do not sign the form until you get to your appointment.

  4. Get two passport photos taken.

  5. Prepare to pay $110.00 in the same currency.

  6. Note that no electronics are allowed in the building.

  7. If you want your passport mailed to you. you will pay for the postage before you leave your appointment.

  8. In Vietnam, my passport was ready 7 days later.

  9. Mail your old passport back to the Consulate and they will punch holds in your old passport then mail both the new and old passport back to you.

  10. You're now ready to collect those stamps!
