What Happens When You Meet Another Digital Nomad?
What do an IT analyst, education specialist and smokejumper have in common? At first glance, nothing BUT they just happen to be in the same place at the same time as they scramble to make breakfast in a hostel kitchen. As they greet each other they start to realize that they are all living the nomadic life. There is nothing more exciting than meeting another digital nomad when you least expect it (i.e bus, rest stop, hostel, etc.). When you are traveling alone for so long you start to get used to the loneliness but when you meet someone who is going through similar obstacles it can leave you reassured and reenergized, or at least it did for me.
Here are a few of the great things that happen when you meet another digital nomad:
Sharing your story
As a digital nomad, it is so important to remember why you are doing what you are doing. This lifestyle is full of adventure and wonder but it isn’t always the easiest and can be overwhelming at times. Slowing down and sharing the story of how you got started, what you’ve seen and how you’ve grown is a reminder to yourself. Each time you tell your story you recommit to your purpose and vision. It is also inspirational hearing other people’s story and ways they’ve overcome the expected and unexpected obstacles of being a digital nomad. This storytelling creates camaraderie and connections with a complete stranger! You’ll be wooed by the things you haven’t experienced yet but may want to. And the honest appreciation and support from a stranger are strangely reassuring.
Learning new things
Living the nomadic life leaves you learning something new every day whether it’s how to make gourmet meals in a microwave, doing your laundry in a sink or finding great local deals. Meeting other digital nomads gives you the opportunity to swap tricks of the trade. You may meet someone who has the advice you’ve been looking for. Meeting other nomads is also an opportunity to network with someone who has a certain expertise or experience that can advise or shape your experience, work and/or travel for the better.
Creating memories
Digital nomads are always creating memories with new places but it can be more exciting if you have a nomad friend with you. On those days when you want to be a hermit (nomads have those days too), you may have someone knock on your door or tap you at the coffee shop to invite you to a new and exciting adventure. Your new nomad friend may push you outside of your comfort zone and help you conquer some fear you may have. If you don’t have direct access to digital nomads, use social media to find nomad tribes or meetups in your area. Finding a support group in every place helps you build a mini nomad network and create lasting memories.
Hopefully, these things inspire you to join or start a conversation. Being a digital nomad is amazing. Be proud of your work, share your story, continue to learn new things, and create memories. From one digital nomad to the next, make your experience your own!
